| History and Nature
Raetihi is a small and peaceful township located in the central plateau of New Zealand's North Island. It is an historic pioneering timber town, which once knew a bustling trade of commercial activity. Access in those days was by river steamer from Wanganui to Pipiriki and from Pipiriki to Raetihi by bullock train. The river steamer Waimarino has been restored and makes regular tourist trips waimarie.co.nz. Today Raetihi is the gateway to a vast and unspoilt area of native bush. Its close proximity to both the Whanganui and Tongariro National Parks makes it a haven for setting off on adventures into some of New Zealand's most unique natural wonders. The mystique of the area, particularly the Whanganui River has been captured in the hearts of locals and devoted visitors who embrace the hunting, fishing and tramping cultures.

The theatre nowadays is used predominantly for art and cultural gatherings including the Waimarino Art Awards in July each year. Nearby enjoy Maori art at Te Gallery. This place is owned and operated by local artist Ted Barham whose vision is to depict in Raetihi not only the strong Maori culture but also the timber, hunting and now film culture of the place.
